Making doll outfits makes a lot of sense, and making clothes out of some fabrics you like is a joy. Here I will give you tips on how to sew doll clothes for beginners, including choosing fabric, cutting, sewing and finishing.

This is also a good way to teach children to sew, because most of the patterns are simple and the production time is not long. Once you have the confidence to make doll clothing, it’s time to create a whole wardrobe!

1.How to Choose FABRIC AND TRIMS

  • PRINTS – You can follow the clothes pattern to print out if the pattern have seam allowance. Otherwise, look for 1/4 inch (6mm) widths. Because different brands and types of dolls may have slightly different sizes, please try cutting out paper patterns on the dolls before using expensive fabrics or sewing with cheap fabrics to check the fit for your clothes.

  • FABRIC TYPE – The composition of the fabric used doesn’t matter, but try choosing a fabric that is not too thin, as they have a small seam allowance and garment size, making it difficult to sew. I often use old clothes to change into doll clothes, not only save money, but also get some very creative combinations. So don’t limit your choice to fabric.

  • FASTENINGS – Generally velcro can get caught in the doll’s hair. So please purchase a doll Velcro which types of Velcro are soft and not easy to scratch. You also can use little Snap button.

  • DECORATION- Try using different clothing materials as decoration, such as ribbons, lace, woolen cloth, etc. This can make clothes more characteristic and layered. Get creative with fabric choices!

2. How to CUTTING

  • ACCURATE- Because the pattern is small and the seam margin is only 1/4 inch (6 mm), it is important to cut the pattern and fabric accurately to ensure that the garment is suitable after completion.

  • KEEP TRACK- Because the fabric is small, it is easier to move, pay attention to whether it is kept at the seam when sewing

3. How to STITCHING

  • If the fabric is clamped in the machine during sewing due to the small amount of stitching, you can try sewing on a piece of thin paper to stabilize it. When finished, rip the paper away the paper gently. Therefore, I will suggest using thicker cloth for beginners. It will be more easy to sewing.

  • STITCH SIZE – Use smaller stitches than normal if you want it to look to scale. Try a length of 2.0 on a scrap of your fabric and see how it looks.

4. How to FINISHING SEAMS

  • In thinner cloth, I would suggest sewing with a serger to organize the seams to make clothes more beautiful overall.

  • In thicker fabrics, finishing your seams with a serger can add bulk due to the extra threads. Therefore, I will use fray stop liquid (also called Fray Check) to stop seams unraveling.

5. How to PRESSING

  • If you press the small seam with an iron during sewing, it will be easier to sew and make the doll’s clothes look better. This is not necessary, but it can help buy a mini iron like Clover to squeeze the seams. However, I often use straight hair clips instead, haha!
